Today's Modern Femme: Malonda

My dears - it's been a while since I've posted on the "Today's Modern Femme" series, but yay, we're back!  The only thing fiercer than the wind on my walk to drop Bebe off at daycare this morning was the fabulous Malonda.  As I gritted my teeth against the freezing cold, I saw her statuesque figure and fantastic hair, and knew that nothing short of frostbite and hypothermia would keep me from interviewing her for y'all.

Malonda isn't just striking on the outside - she's a creative and entrepreneurial force! Here's what the author, host, spokesperson and model had to say about her winter beauty routine, anticipated spring fashion, and the perfect menu to serve during the Oscars....

MF:  Hi Malonda!  What are you wearing?

Malonda: Hi Libbet, I am wearing Gucci shades,  Bamboolze Ear Spears, Boden leather boots, CJ by Cookie Johnson velvet pants, a Francesco Biasia leather purse and a wool Ben Sherman coat.

MF:  I don't know about you, but this winter weather is brutal on my skin.  Do you have any products or routines that are a must for your winter beauty regimen?

Malonda: Winter is brutal and is important to moisturize, moisturize and moisturize some more. It is also important to drink lots of good water (alkaline if possible), drink fresh juice, eat fresh fruits and vegetables and get as much rest as possible. In terms of my actual skin care regimen I produce an all natural and organic body product line called Ellie Oliver (www.ellieoliver.com) which I named after my Great-Grandparents Ellie and Oliver Richard. I use all of my own products because they are created with premium ingredients and work so well.

Recently I started to cleanse my face with a new product that I recently developed - Aunt Gladys Get Pretty Skin Oil which is so amazing! Sometimes I use the oil alone with water or I mix it with my Aunt Gladys Get Pretty Skin Cleansing Grains for an added benefit because the grains act as a gentle exfoliant. Next I follow up with a little of the Get Pretty Skin Oil or my Get Pretty Skin Butter. This cleansing routine along with a weekly Get Pretty Skin Facial Steam helps to give me the glow that I need to feel fabulous. I also drink my Get Pretty Skin Tea because it takes care of my skin from the inside. I will be 41 years old on March 21st of this year and it is important for me to take better care of my skin so that I can age gracefully. I have clients of all ages and all of them rave about the instant glow that they get all year round from using my Aunt Gladys Get Pretty Skin products which can be found online at
www.ellieoliver.com. My Get Pretty Skin Oil is not available online yet but it will be soon. If anyone is interested they can contact me via malondarichardsia@gmail.com.

MF:   A beauty and an entreprenuer, you are an amazing Modern Femme!  Now tell me, spring is approaching - what are you most looking forward to, sartorially-speaking?

Malonda: I am looking forward to finding contemporary African graphic prints to mix with rare vintage finds. One of my favorite things about spring is being able to wear bright handbags and bold accessories to communicate my bold approach to fashion.

MF:  I'm having an Oscar party.  What should I feed my fabulous guests - finger food or a sit-down meal?  Any recipe recommendations?

Malonda:  You should feed your guests some fabulous vegan /vegetarian finger foods coupled with vegan desserts that will have them asking for the recipes. You can choose your favorite films from the nominations and name the dishes after them or you could create a unique dish and name them after your top picks.

Visit
pinterest.com for delicious /fabulous recipe ideas. Here are a few that I would recommend.

Strawberry Love Juice

2 pints of fresh strawberries (save enough to use on top of glass)
3-4 lemons (peeled if not organic)
1/4 cup of agave nectar
1 medium piece of ginger (size of your pinkie finger)
40 oz of spring water
star shaped ice (use a silicon mold and fill with spring water - for added style you can add pieces of lemon rind and or strawberries for extra flare)

Juice the strawberries and lemons in a juicer and pour the mixture into pitcher of cold spring water and ice. Serve chilled with star ice cubes with a slice of strawberry in fancy tall glasses.

Or buy store bought lemonade, crush strawberries and pour the mixture together
and serve chilled  with star cubes with a slice of strawberry in fancy tall glasses.

Stuffed Mini Mushrooms with Shredded Beets

1 pint of Bella mushrooms
Amino Acids
Beets
Store bought Hummus
dried Basil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Rinse the bella mushrooms and  put them onto a parchment paper on a cookie sheet pan. Fill mushrooms with amino acids and bake until dark brown (usually 20-25 min). While the mushrooms are baking shred the beets with a julienne peeler and place in a small bowl.

Once the mushrooms have cooled put them on a large white dish or any fancy dish you have and fill them with a teaspoon of hummus, top with basil and the shredded beets.

Sweet and Salty Vegetables
Fresh or Frozen vegetables
Coconut Oil

Steam vegetable medley in a steamer or on a stovetop steamer. Once cooked put the medley into a large ceramic bowl and top with 2-3 tbsps of coconut oil.

Today's Modern Femme: Jennifer

As I walked to work this morning, I despaired of finding any Modern Femmes to interview.  The streets were empty, dotted with only the occasional male pedestrian.  I had resigned myself to a femme-free day, when like a beacon, Jennifer’s cobalt blue coat caught my eye.   And boy, do good things come to those who wait: Jennifer, a law student, has an eye for detail that makes her a sartorial standout and no doubt will serve her well in her future career!  She spoke with me about her love of all things vintage, what her go-to holiday gifts are, and how law students unwind.

Style AND substance: Modern
Femme Jennifer

MF:  Good morning Jennifer! Tell me, what are you wearing?

Jennifer:  Good morning! I’m wearing Zara flats and Elie Tahari slacks.  My gloves are from H&M, and the coat, interestingly enough, is J.C. Penny Worthington. The bag is Urban Outfitters’ Kimchi brand.

MF:  You look great – and your gloves are so cute!  Is there anything for the winter that you can’t live without or that you’re really into this season?

Jennifer:  I have a lot of must haves!  I wear a lot of vintage clip earrings, and I love vintage wool skirts. I also love J. Crew’s double serge wool pencil skirts.  For more casual looks, I love the Asos UK website – especially their high waist jeans.

MF:   For the upcoming holidays, what are your go-to gifts that work for you?

Jennifer:  I give my sisters – I have three sisters – Bath and Body Works products.  You can never go wrong with bath and body products!  I’m also into organic beauty products now – there’s so much out there to try.  And you can get nice little gifts at the Limited Corporation’s stores.

MF:  Can I be on your Christmas list, please?  Finally, because winter break is coming up - what would be your ideal way to relax on a day off from school?

Jennifer:  I love Lucky magazine, I’ve had a subscription to it for over 10 years, since Kim France was the editor.  That’s my escape – that and vintage shopping. There’s a really interesting thrift shore in Woodbridge, Virginia that I love to get away to visit.  Or I’d go home to Georgia – that’s where I’m from!

Not only was I impressed with Jennifer’s attention to detail – but I couldn’t resist getting a close-up of her fabulous gloves.  Jennifer told me she got them at H&M recently – so guess where I’m headed on my lunch break?  How great would these be as stocking stuffers? (That is, if you can resist keeping them for yourself!)

$7.00 wool blend gloves from H&M - love the bows and key hole detailing.
As always, if you covet Jennifer's style, take a look at these pieces:

The beauty is in the details!

Stylin' in the Rain

I stood next to a very chic Modern Femme on the Metro during this morning’s commute to work.  It was a rainy, cold morning, and most everyone on the train looked damp and miserable.  Everyone, except for her.

What first caught my eye were her brilliant gold chandelier earrings, swaying with the rhythm of the train.  I could see them, I realized, because her long hair was loosely coiled under a brown rain hat, setting her earrings on full display.  A long maroon pashmina was draped around her neck, the ends framing her trim tan raincoat, and a pair of Hunter rain boots looked like they were keeping her feet warm and dry.  A chocolate-colored Longchamp bag swung gently at her side, the rain drops beading on its surface, as her manicured fingernails flew over the keypad of her blackberry, which was the same red color as her pashmina.

In short, she was a vision of rainy-day chic.

I hoped that she would get off the train at my stop, but she didn’t and thus an opportunity to interview her for the Today's Modern Femme series evaporated in front of my disappointed eyes.  Quelle dommage.    No doubt she would have had fabulous things to say.

I just couldn’t let this opportunity go, though, to share her look with you all.  Here’s my best impression of the rainy day mystery Modern Femme:

Stay dry out there!

Today's Modern Femme: Alicia

Alicia was in front of me in line today in the post office. I loved her skirt and boots – they reminded me of the west, and cowboys, and wide open spaces. Funny how that works - Alicia, a photographer, had just moved from out west (Montana, to be exact), and this was her first week in DC. Alicia shared her thoughts on serendipity, infinity scarves, and where to get the best food and friendliest service in the Emerald City. Check out Alicia’s portfolio at her website, Aliciawatkinson.wordpress.com

New in town: Modern Femme Alicia
MF: Hi Alicia! Can you tell me what you’re wearing today?
Alicia: Hi! Yes, let’s see. The coat, shirt and backpack are all from American Eagle, the skirt was thifted from the Goodwill, and the boots are a friend’s – I believe they’re from Rocket Dog.

MF: Awesome – what a great mix of pieces. Alicia, you’re from Montana, is there anything fashion-wise that you find you can’t live without during the winter?

Alicia: I have to say that circle infinity scarves are my new obsession – I have one in every color!

MF: Ok, last place you went on holiday, and any recommendations on what to do there?

Alicia: The last place I went on holiday before moving to DC was Seattle. I would recommend going down to Pike’s Place Market and getting fresh seafood. There’s also Three Girls Bakery, which has the most delicious sandwiches, soups and pastries - and the staff is really, really friendly.

MF: Mmmmm, pastries…You mentioned that you just moved to DC – and we’re about to start a series on embracing change, so tell me- was this a change that you instigated, or was it something that you had to adapt to?

Alicia: I believe in serendipity and things falling into place – I was going through a lot of changes in Montana, and a friend had recently moved to DC. I called her one night and was feeling really uninspired – the next day her roommate said “I’m leaving for two months and we need someone to sublet.” Everything fell into place – she called me and I decided to up and move for a couple of months, and here I am in DC! Haven’t even been here a week!

Talk about serendipity –Alicia is the perfect Modern Femme to close out this week as we prepare to head into next week’s new series, Embracing Change. If you love Alicia’s look, see below for inspiration.

Till next week my dears, may your weekends be relaxing, your worries be few, and your horizons be wide, wide open.

xoxo,

MF

Today's Modern Femme: Andrea

We are all of us Modern Femmes - gorgeous, vibrant, spiritual, energetic, multitasking amazons.  We pass each other in the street, wait behind each other in lines, and work side by side every day.  In celebration of our fabulousness I am starting the series “Today’s Modern Femme,” a collection of snapshots of fellow Modern Femmes, out and about and doing their thing.
Our inaugural post features the gorgeous Andrea, whose plum jacket and confident stride caught my eye this morning.  I asked her to share some of her thoughts on fashion, this season’s must-haves, and the movies.
The lovely Modern Femme Andrea.

MF: Hi Andrea! What are you wearing today?
Andrea:  Hi! I’m wearing a Via Spiga jacket, J.Crew jeans, and M.I.A boots.
MF:  Fabulous. Tell me, what do you have in your closet this season that you love?
Andrea: I have these Via Spiga boots that I got at Nordstrom’s that are over the knee and I absolutely love them.  For any woman living somewhere that gets colder than 40 degrees, over the knee boots are essential.
MF:  So true.  And our last question - any upcoming movies you’re dying to see?
Andrea:  I want to see Lincoln, because I love Daniel Day Lewis.
Thanks Andrea for kicking off this series!   If you covet Andrea’s look, here are some suggestions:
